Introduction to Hispanic American Literature
Introduction to Hispanic
American Literature is a manual aimed at students of Spanish as a second
language. For this reason, it is a non-exhaustive introductory text that
according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL)
guidelines requires an intermediate reading level.
The first part of the book
studies the literary periods in Latin America, particularly in Mexico, ranging
from pre-Hispanic times to the avant-garde. The second part studies Spanish
literature from the Middle Ages to the avant-garde. The manual contains grammar
exercises that will help students understand the texts.
Introducción a la Literatura Hispanoamericana es un manual dirigido a
estudiantes de español como segunda lengua. Por esta razón es un texto no
exhaustivo que de acuerdo con las directrices del American Council on the Teaching
of Foreign Language (ACTFL) requiere un nivel de lectura intermedio de español.
La primera parte del libro estudia los períodos literarios en América
Latina, particularmente en México, que van desde la época prehispánica hasta
las vanguardias. La segunda parte estudia la literatura española desde la Edad
Media hasta las vanguardias. El manual contiene ejercicios de gramática que
ayudarán a los estudiantes a comprender los textos.
Through the reading of short stories and grammatical
exercises, students will be able to improve their Spanish moving to an
intermediate-high level.
Spanish Grammar and Literature es un manual dirigido a estudiantes de
español como segunda lengua. Es un texto introductorio que, según los
lineamientos del American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL),
requiere un nivel de lectura intermedio.
A través de la
lectura de cuentos cortos y ejercicios de gramática, los estudiantes podrán
mejorar su español pasando a un nivel intermedio alto.
Del hecho al dicho is a manual aimed at students who are beginning to learn Spanish as a second language. It contains basic grammar, mechanical and communicative exercises. The text is an auxiliary of the communicative activities that the instructor carries out in the classroom. In accordance with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) guidelines, upon completion of the manual, students will move from a Novice Low to a Novice Mid-level.
Vacios
Uno de los tantos rasgos humanos en el temor al vacío, a la nada, a la
ausencia de materia que comprima espacios. La ciencia de la Historia registra
cómo es que a través del tiempo la humanidad ha llenado espacios y ha dado
cuenta de la habilidad de las culturas para resolver tal preocupación humana. Ambientada
en la década de los noventa, la novela Vacios
aborda, de manera simbólica, el desasosiego humano por cubrir ausencias. En
la historia, personajes como Malicha, Greta, Andrés/Chemo, el profesor
Fortunato, Humberto, entre otros, insisten en llenar sus vacíos y carencias.
Cada quien, a su modo, cree lograr su propósito. Chemo involucrándose con el
narcotráfico, Greta viviendo una vida fútil, Fortunato interactuando con sus
estudiantes e involucrándose con Greta, Malicha pintando, etc. En la novela,
una serie de espacios también muestran la preocupación por los vacíos como aquella ciudad garigoleada con sus
casonas y callejuelas solemnes o el retirado lugar donde el sol golpea afanoso y donde de la tierra parecía
emanar fuego. Vacíos también hace referencia a una de
tantas décadas pasadas en las que la corrupción reinaba en un lugar cualquiera.
One of the many human traits is the fear of emptiness, of nothingness, and of the absence of matter that fills spaces. Historical science records how, over time, humanity has consistently sought to fill these voids, showcasing the ability of cultures to address these concerns. Set in the 1990s, the novel Vacios symbolically explores the human anxiety surrounding the need to fill these absences. The story follows characters like Malicha, Greta, Andrés/Chemo, Professor Fortunato, and Humberto, each of whom strives to fill their own emptiness and shortcomings. In their own ways, each believes they have achieved this goal: Chemo through involvement in drug trafficking, Greta through a futile existence, Fortunato through his interactions with students and his relationship with Greta, and Malicha through painting, among others. The novel also portrays several spaces that reflect this preoccupation with emptiness, such as the scribbled city with its grand mansions and solemn alleys, or the isolated place where the sun relentlessly beats down and fire seems to emerge from the earth. "Emptiness" also alludes to one of the many past decades in which corruption reigned in an arbitrary place.

Sincretismo Cultural en Migrantes Nahuas de Acapulco,
Guerrero es un estudio antropológico que el autor realizó a
medados de los noventa del siglo pasado. El libro analiza el proceso de
integración de los nahuas del Alto Balsas del estado de Guerrero a la ciudad y
puerto de Acapulco. La primera parte del libro delimita las áreas geográficas
culturales del estudio y analiza las causas de las migraciones de los
pobladores de las comunidades indígenas de San Juan Tetelcingo y Maxela. La
segunda parte es un breve estudio diacrónico de la región del Alto Balsas el
cual comprende la época prehispánica hasta la década de los cincuenta del siglo
pasado. La tercera parte es un estudio etnográfico de San Juan Tetelcingo y
Maxela y un recuento sobre las organizaciones políticas en la región y su
relación con los movimientos indígenas nacionales. La última parte compara los
estilos de vida de los migrantes de San Juan Tetelcingo y Maxela, así como los
niveles de integración que tenían a mediados de los noventa.

Guerrero, encontrarán en este libro instrumentos teóricos, históricos y
etnográficos que les ayudará a tener un panorama de la situación sociocultural
del Alto Balsas en particular de San Juan Tetelcingo y Maxela.
The book Sincretismo Cultural en Migrantes Nahuas de Acapulco, Guerrero is
an anthropological study that the author conducted in the mid-nineties of the
last century. The book analyzes the process of integration of the Nahuas from
Alto Balsas in the state of Guerrero to the city of Acapulco, Mexico. The first
part of the book delimits the cultural geographic areas of the study and
analyzes the causes of the migrations of the inhabitants of the indigenous
communities of San Juan Tetelcingo and Maxela. The second part is a brief
diachronic study of the Alto Balsas region which covers the pre-Hispanic period
until the fifties of the last century. The third part is an ethnographic study
of San Juan Tetelcingo and Maxela and an account of the political organizations
in the region and their relationship with the national indigenous movements.
The last part compares the lifestyles of the migrants from San Juan Tetelcingo
and Maxela, as well as the levels of integration they had in the mid-nineties.

Short stories for Spanish learners
El volumen 1 de la serie Reading for Spanish learners contiene cinco breves cuentos. El propósito es exponer a los estudiantes a auténticos materiales de lectura que les permita mejorar su vocabulario y gramáticsa. En la introducción, los estudiantes encontrarán una serie de estrategias para leer en una lengua extranjera. Antes de cada cuento hay un breve comentario. Volume 1 of the Reading for Spanish Learners series features five short stories. The aim of the book is to expose students to authentic reading materials that help them enhance their vocabulary and grammar.
